Officials at Kirtland Community College recently recognized students for their academic achievements during the 2012-13 winter semester which earned them placement on the KCC’s dean’s and president’s lists.

Grant training for early childhood education planned
A series of grant writing trainings will be offered to those working within the early childhood communities of Crawford, Ogemaw, Oscoda, and Roscommon Counties. The trainings are focused on basic and intermediate grant writing as it applies to supporting a system of joint recruitment and enrollment across all early childhood education and preschool programs.
Being an exchange student results in change for two RHS sophomores
Soaking in the culture of northern Michigan, exchange students Nadine Pauser and Tim Buchmueller have been attending Roscommon High School, Buchmueller since September and Pauser since January.

Haight helps build second fastest college race car
Roscommon’s Trevor Haight, a mechanical engineering major, competed with his Saginaw Valley State University’s 2013 Cardinal Formula Racing teammates in the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers Collegiate Design Series at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, May 8-11.

Two honored by Hope College
Seniors Amanda Milliken and Matthew Milliken of Roscommon were both named to the dean’s list at Hope College following the spring semester of the 2012-13 school year.
To be honored, students must earn at least a 3.5 grade point average.
Burnside graduates from GVSU
Zachary Burnside of Houghton Lake graduated with honors from Grand Valley State University Meijer Honors College with a Bachelor of Science degree April 27.
He will continue to work for Amway Corporation in Grand Rapids as an associate database administrator.
Burnside, a 2009 graduate of Houghton Lake High School, is the son of Mike and Vicki Burnside.

RMS recognizes 39 students for academic excellence
A total of 39 students were recognized at the Roscommon Middle School academic excellence program on May 31 for achieving all “A” status during the year. The program sponsored by the RHS Student Council was hosted by Principal Ron Alden and teacher Doug Goulette.
HLHS’s SLS/SADD recognized for study
The Students Leading Students/Students Against Destructive Decisions group at Houghton Lake High School received recognition the last week of May from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration for its two years of participation in evidencebased intervention studies. The administration is part of the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services Department.

Fundraiser planned for Community Swim Program in Missaukee
A pork rib dinner and live auction fundraiser is planned June 21 to benefit the Community Swim Program of Missaukee County.
The event will be held at the Lake City Eagles, 4154 West Houghton Lake Rd., Lake City. It will run from 5 to 7 p.m.

A Pampered Chef fundraiser will be held June 12 to benefit Relay For Life Roscommon County.

Foster care orientation to be held June 11
Do you want to do something today for a child’s tomorrow?
There are more than 13,000 children living in foster care in Michigan. Lutheran Child and Family Service of Michigan (LCFS) works together with families from 13 Northern Michigan counties to provide loving, stable homes for children who have been removed for their homes due to abuse and neglect.

The Roscommon County Veterans Association will host its second annual fundraiser on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Eddie’s Bar and Grill, 928 West Houghton Lake Dr., Prudenville.
New to the fundraiser this year are hot dog eating contests.
